Learning how to play American Mahjong can feel overwhelming at first, but once you understand the rules and setup, it becomes one of the most enjoyable games around. This guide covers the basic American Mahjong rules, setup steps, and gameplay flow so you can start playing with confidence.

1. How Many Players Do You Need?

  • American Mahjong is played with four players.
  • Each player sits on one side of a square table, representing East, South, West, and North (known as “winds”).
  • The East player acts as the dealer for the round.

2. American Mahjong Tiles Explained

A standard American Mahjong set has 152 tiles. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Suits (Dots, Bams, Craks): 36 tiles each (numbers 1–9).
  • Winds: East, South, West, North (16 total).
  • Dragons: Red, Green, White (16 total).
  • Flowers & Seasons: 8 total.
  • Jokers (Wild Tiles): 8 total, unique to American Mahjong.

👉 Beginner Tip: Jokers can stand in for any tile in a set, but not for single or pair requirements.

3. The National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) Card

Unlike other Mahjong versions, American Mahjong uses a new card every year published by the NMJL.

  • The card lists all valid hands you can play.
  • You win only by completing one of the hands shown on the current year’s card.
  • Every player needs their own card at the table.

4. How to Set Up American Mahjong

  1. Shuffle & Build the Wall
    • Players mix the tiles face down.
    • Each builds a “wall” two tiles high and 19 tiles long.
    • Push the walls together to form a square.
  2. Pick the Dealer (East)
    • East is determined randomly (dice or tile draw).
    • East starts with 14 tiles, while all other players get 13.

5. The Charleston: American Mahjong’s Unique Step

The Charleston is a special tile exchange before play begins.

  • Players pass tiles in three rounds:
    1. Right → Pass 3 tiles.
    2. Across → Pass 3 tiles.
    3. Left → Pass 3 tiles.
  • Optional “courtesy passes” may follow.
  • Purpose: help players move toward one of the winning hands on the card.

6. How to Play a Turn

Each turn consists of:

  1. Draw a tile from the wall OR take the last discard (if it helps your hand).
  2. Discard one tile face up in the center.

Play continues clockwise.

7. Building Winning Combinations

In American Mahjong, you aim to build sets from the card, such as:

  • Pung: 3 identical tiles
  • Kong: 4 identical tiles
  • Quint: 5 identical tiles (only in American Mahjong)
  • Pair: 2 identical tiles

8. Winning the Game (Mahjong!)

  • A player declares “Mahjong!” when their tiles exactly match a valid hand on the NMJL card.
  • If incorrect → it’s called a false Mahjong, and play continues with a penalty.
  • Reveal the hand for verification.
  • If correct → you win and score based on the card.
